New on YouTube. In various religious and magical spaces, the concept of “tradition” is incredibly important. But what is tradition, really? Why is it valuable? And why do people get so weird about it?
In this video, I talk through my thoughts on these questions, and provide my own proposed definition of religion: A set of practices that provide a bridge between the personal and transpersonal, by means of a real or imagined historical provenance. Taking this definition, I think through the value of tradition, why people feel so threatened when they think their traditions are being eroded, and why people invent things and try to pass them off as traditional.
