In all the conversations people have about Wicca, it seems they’re often not working from a shared definition of what Wicca actually is–and that can be a source of confusion and problems. In this video, I talk through what I consider to be the six basic defining features of Wicca:
-It’s a form of witchcraft
-It’s a Neopagan religion
-It has some kind of focus on divine polarity
-It celebrates the eightfold Wheel of the Year
-It uses a magical circle quartered by the four cardinal directions
-It focuses on the four elements of Air, Fire, Water, and Earth
From my perspective, these are the criteria that make something Wiccan or not. Wiccans can add all kinds of practices to this skeleton, but to my mind, none of those practices are essentially Wiccan, and I think that’s important to keep in mind when we talk about what Wicca is.
